Mission

Our mission is to empower low-income families and individuals to overcome obstacles to their

well-being and self-sufficiency.

Founded in 1981, Diaspora Community Services (DCS) is a Brooklyn-based multi-service and multi-cultural nonprofit organizations serving low-income residents and immigrants in New York City, We operate four (4) New York City sites and a community health center in Haiti.  Staffed by professionals having expertise in their respective fields, and overseen by a Board of Directors that reflects the diversity of the approximately 10,000 individuals served annually.  Our mission is to empower low-income families and individuals to overcome obstacles to their well-being and self-sufficiency.

Our goals connect to Diaspora's mission by developing methodologies and service delivery approaches that address the root causes of the inequities and disparities our clients/communities encounter: we help immigrants and low-income individuals, families and children access quality health services, adequate housing, job training and education, and acquire the skills, information and social support services critical to meeting their basic needs serving as a launch pad to increasing stable lives.
Our clients have disproportionately high rates of chronic disease, substance abuse, domestic violence, household instability and live in communities having a wide range of socio-economic-quality of life disparities: crime, unemployment, education, infant mortality, adolescent pregnancy and substance abuse. Many of our clients, are recent immigrants or undocumented, have minimal education, limited understanding of English- making them at-risk and vulnerable for continued job/housing instability, housing eviction and homelessness.

Diaspora's definition of success does not rest solely on service delivery as an independent endeavor -- but through a series of formal and informal interventions.  Clients are empowered to understand the value of their connection and relationship with Diaspora, understanding that affiliation is a transformative mechanism to move through and overcome the obstacles and inhibitors that impede their progress and advancement.
